The Anti Litter Competition for 2017 is beginning on
Monday 8th May 2017. T hat is this coming Monday. As you are all aware I am sure, Millstreet Town won 1st Prize in Category A. So will we make it 2 in a row. I reckon we can do that no bother. So grab your sweeping brushes, shovels, gloves and bin bags and as always get out and clean, clean, clean. The evenings are only fab all this week so no excuses. Why not rope in a couple of the neighbours on your street and make a right good go of it. You will be done in no time. I will post the schedule of the particular areas that will judged just as soon as I get them. Any groups or any volunteers that would like help or a loan of equipment for their litter pick up please do not hesitate to contact me here on the page and I will sort out gear for you. Fingers crossed we will be top notch again this year.
Great news came from The Helix this afternoon. Not only did Millstreet earn an extra 6 points this year in the National Tidy Town Competition but we are to see the return of a Bronze Medal. This is an amazing result for the town. The report has been loaded up on the website and full comments and points can be seen from this page. http://millstreettidytown.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2016-County-Cork_North-Millstreet-480.pdf. Millstreet Tidy Town Association would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved. Without a strong community spirit and a stalwart of volunteers this result would not be possible. Tidy Town is just one simple way that we can showcase how wonderful a place Millstreet is. We can hold our heads high safe in the knowledge that all the hard work that people are putting into to keeping this town a beautiful place to live is paying off. So hats off and big congratulations to all. Pat and Noreen were in attendance representing the Millstreet Tidy Town Association this afternoon and I will post pictures of this fantastic afternoons result when I receive them.
Happy New Year to Everybody. Apologies for the lack of communication for last number of weeks. This is now to end. Back to regular updates and posts. I can here all the shouts of joy from here. So what better way to start a New Year than to reflect on the achievements of the previous year. There is so much to choose from. Well we had a very successful Anti Litter Challenge campaign this last year. We have an eye on first place for 2016. Then there is also the various projects that Tony Keneally, Wildlife Biologist has been heavily involved in with both the National and Secondary Schools. Also brilliant results in the National Tidy Town for this past year, only narrowly missing out on a Bronze Medal. Millstreet won a Pride of Place award in October. New Water Butts were placed throughout the Town, as were hanging baskets and Nest boxes. Let’s not forget about the new Footpaths. These are only a few of the amazing accomplishments achieved by volunteers, FÁS workers, Council Workers and many more. All kindly giving up their time and energy to make our town a wonderful place to live. So what are the hopes for 2016. Well aim high is what I think. Anyone fancy volunteering email, tweet, Facebook, there no shortage of ways to communicate your interest to us. There is always plenty of work to be done. So as we begin to see a stretch starting to creep back into the evening and the rain has finally stopped, I found a nice little New Year’s quote that kind of sums up the feeling really.
“Be More Awesome Than Last Year”
Drum Roll please…. Tough competition this year guys so many business to choose from. A huge effort and great to see. There can only be one winner though. Derry Sheehan, Millstreet Tidy Town Association Chairperson was delighted to announce that O’Flynn Medical have won Best Commercial Premises 2015. Tadhg and Ann O’Flynn were delighted to accept the award this evening on behalf of their company. Ann and Tadhg were presented with a wall plaque which will be placed outside their premises. Highly commended for 2015 are Tony O’Brien Butcher and Noel C. Duggan. Again tough decision this year as a massive effort put forward by the local business in Millstreet. A sincere congratulations to all involved.
In the words of Old Blue Eyes, “And now the end is near…” The final Litter Pick Up for 2015 is season is upon us. Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel, 7pm in The Square, Millstreet. Bags, Pickers and Gloves provided. Millstreet Tidy Town Association would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the stalwarts. To all those who come out on a Thursday evening week in week out. To all those who off their own backs are picking litter up on a DAILY basis. To all the lads in FÁS. To all those who have cleaned up even just outside their own houses and business premises. These people are an absolute credit to Millstreet Town and Millstreet Tidy Town are hugely grateful for the time and effort that these people go to keep Millstreet the beautiful town that it is. Thank you all very much.

The Anti Litter Competition Period Results are in. We are in 4th position again. Not bad but we are definitely in with a chance of winning. The next judging period is start Monday again. 25th May to 3rd June. The entire town will be judged with particular focus on Clara Road for this judging period. With a massive last surge we can most definitely aim to win this competition, if everybody could do their a small part. Even something as little as keeping the area outside your own house or business premises and just give a quick look and a small tidy up every morning would go a long way in improving our chances. As you can see any points that are gained now are of huge importance. Great result again for this period. Keep up the good work everybody.
Millstreet Tidy Town Association are delighted to announce that once again this year there will be an award for Best Frontage Competition 2015. There will be two categories this year. Best Commercial Premises and Best Residential Area. The Best Residential Area, can be an estate, a street or a road. Adjudication will commence in June and run through to the end of August. So why not get together with your neighbours and win it for your residential area. Everybody can do a small part and make a big impact.
