Planting in Town

untitled (384 x 512)

As you may have noticed the Millstreet Tidy Town Association Volunteers have been quite busy over the last number of weeks. Almost all of the planters and tubs have been set with beautiful flowers over the last number of weeks. Please see pictures in the 2016 gallery for some pictures of the very hard work achieved. Just a reminder to everybody that is living/working near one of the tubs or planters, please, please can you water them. They will need to be watered 3 times a week even if it rains. The flowers for the poles will be out up very soon.

Calling all Volunteers

main_image (371 x 323)It’s a beautiful Sunday sunny morning and looking at tomorrow’s weather the forecast is jus as nice. So bearing this in mind some of our volunteers are going to give the picnic area on Drishane Road a little spruce up. So I am hoping that we can get some of the lovely people of Millstreet Town to come and help also. It will take half the time to do if we have plenty of bodies. All you need to bring is a paintbrush and your best Picasso impression. Young and not so young are all invited.  So tomorrow evening from 6.30pm meeting @ the picnic area on Drishane Road. See you there.

Thank You & Well Done

Tmc1 (600 x 337)Team Millstreet Clean-Up was  a massive success this morning. This is all down to the many volunteers that started yesterday evening and were still going @ 4pm this afternoon. All approach roads into Millstreet have been cleaned. Some of the back roads have also been done. Tullig to Aubane was cleaned last week. Tanyard Wood residents were also out in force this morning also. It warms the heart to see such a fantastic community spirit alive and well in Millstreet. We were also joined today by Cllr. Mellissa Mullane and her daughter, whom were out picking litter with the rest of the crew from 10am this morning. Fair Play. Also Mayor of Cork County, John Paul O’Shea joined us and did his bit and then Derry Sheehan, our fearless leader gave him a tour of our fair town and all it has to offer. There was a massive amount of work done this morning, everybody should be very proud of themselves young and old that turned up to give a helping hand this morning. This is a great start to the year. This also places us in a good position heading into the Anti Litter Competition which will be starting soon. Also when all the morning crew were gone home and feet up, I caught a glimpse of the town footpaths being swept this evening by some of the local business’. Really proud of Millstreet Community Spirit that was shown today. Lets keep it going.

Garden Bird Nest Box

Would you like a Free garden bird nest box?nest-box1 (494 x 300)

Millstreet Tidy Towns is actively involved in conserving and enhancing wildlife in the Millstreet area and we have recently had a Biodiversity Action Plan produced for Millstreet. As part of this plan we have made 20 garden bird nest boxes and we are now looking for suitable homes within Millstreet for each box. The nest boxes were made by Millstreet Mens Shed and they are of a very high quality.

The boxes are suitable for Blue Tit and Great Tit which readily use nest boxes. The boxes can be placed on the wall of a building or on the trunk of a tree. Suitable homes would include houses that have a garden with some amount of cover including shrubs, hedging and trees. Houses with cats as pets are not suitable. Boxes will be fitted by Millstreet Tidy Towns/Mens Shed.

By taking a box you are providing a safe and secure nest site for our garden birds and helping in their conservation, as well as enjoying watching the birds use your nest box.In return,we would ask that you complete a once yearly survey detailing the type and number of birds using the birdbox.

If you are interested in taking a box please contact us here and leave your name, address and contact number and we will be in touch with you. Deadline for applications is Thursday, 24th of March. All applications will be vetted for suitability of location by Tony Keneally our Wildlife Biologist.
